Soccer Aid Kicks Off for UNICEF

Soccer Aid Kicks Off for UNICEF  —  2nd June, 2006

72, 000 people packed into Old Trafford in Manchester last Saturday to witness one of the more surreal moments in football history.

The concept of Soccer Aid was dreamt up by Robbie Williams and Jonathon Wilkes, to raise money for UNICEF, by pitching two teams combining both celebrities and retired football greats. England's team, captained by Robbie (and managed by Terry Venebles), played a strong match against the Rest of World team led by celebrity chef, Gordon Ramsay (and managed by Ruud Gullit). England led after the first half thanks to two memorable goals scored by Les Ferdinand and “Man of the Match”, Jonathon Wilkes.

In the second half, the Rest Of The World Team claimed a goal back through a Maradona penalty, in the end it was Robbie's evening when England won 2:1.

However, the real winners will be the underprivileged children of Africa who benefit from the money raised in support of UNICEF. To date, Soccer Aid has raised a whopping £2.5 million for UNICEF. To find out how you too can pledge, please visit their website here.
